An automated image analysis methodology for classifying megakaryocytes in chronic myeloproliferative disorders

2008

This work describes an automatic method for discrimination in microphotographs between normal and pathological human megakaryocytes and between two kinds of disorders of these cells. A segmentation procedure has been developed, mainly based on mathematical morphology and wavelet transform, to isolate the cells. The features of each megakaryocyte (e.g. area, perimeter and tortuosity of the cell and its nucleus, and shape complexity via elliptic Fourier transform) are used by a regression tree procedure applied twice: the first time to find the set of normal megakaryocytes and the second to distinguish between the pathologies. The output of our classifier has been compared to the interpretati…

Radiologic team performance index: A new paradigm in KPI evaluating radiology examination volumes department performance: Results of Sicilian regiona…

2018

Background: Efficient management of Radiologic Operative Units (ROU) because population health needs increase while healthcare systems provide less resources expendable in technologies and employee. Purpose: Create a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) defined Radiologic Team Performance Index (RTPI) able to compare the activity and efficiency of ROU operating under different environments and with different resources. Methodology/Approach: A survey was conducted in Sicilian Public Healthcare System on behalf of Sicilian Group of Italian Society of Medical Radiology (SIRM) for a total of 63 investigated ROU. Obtained informations concern workforce, emergency care organization, technologies avail…

Genetic determinants of heel bone properties: genome-wide association meta-analysis and replication in the GEFOS/GENOMOS consortium

2014

Quantitative ultrasound of the heel captures heel bone properties that independently predict fracture risk and, with bone mineral density (BMD) assessed by X-ray (DXA), may be convenient alternatives for evaluating osteoporosis and fracture risk. We performed a meta-analysis of genome-wide association (GWA) studies to assess the genetic determinants of heel broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA; n = 14 260), velocity of sound (VOS; n = 15 514) and BMD (n = 4566) in 13 discovery cohorts. Independent replication involved seven cohorts with GWA data (in silico n = 11 452) and new genotyping in 15 cohorts (de novo n = 24 902). In combined random effects, meta-analysis of the discovery and repli…

The continuing medical education Expectations, motivations and evaluations of the training experience in the Medical Radiologic Technologist

2010

Abstract Every country in the world has the obligatory program: Continuing Medical Education with the aim of maintaining a high standard of professionalism, that is in step with the times. The motivations, expectations and satisfaction that characterize, both the relational and the cognitive plan and the participation of Sanitary Technicians of Medical Radiology training CME courses, are the subjects of this study that involved 100 Radiology technicians. The results highlight areas of satisfaction and give valuable suggestions on how to plan future courses with the highest level of effectiveness.

Swallowing evaluation with videofluoroscopy in the paediatric population

2017

The appropriate and justified use of medical radiation in cardiovascular imaging: a position document of the ESC Associations of Cardiovascular Imagi…

2014

The benefits of cardiac imaging are immense, and modern medicine requires the extensive and versatile use of a variety of cardiac imaging techniques. Cardiologists are responsible for a large part of the radiation exposures every person gets per year from all medical sources. Therefore, they have a particular responsibility to avoid unjustified and non-optimized use of radiation, but sometimes are imperfectly aware of the radiological dose of the examination they prescribe or practice. This position paper aims to summarize the current knowledge on radiation effective doses (and risks) related to cardiac imaging procedures. We have reviewed the literature on radiation doses, which can range …

RENEB Inter-Laboratory Comparison 2021: Inter-Assay Comparison of Eight Dosimetry Assays

2023

Tools for radiation exposure reconstruction are required to support the medical management of radiation victims in radiological or nuclear incidents. Different biological and physical dosimetry assays can be used for various exposure scenarios to estimate the dose of ionizing radiation a person has absorbed. Regular validation of the techniques through inter-laboratory comparisons (ILC) is essential to guarantee high quality results. In the current RENEB inter-laboratory comparison, the performance quality of established cytogenetic assays [dicentric chromosome assay (DCA), cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay (CBMN), stable chromosomal translocation assay (FISH) and premature chromosome co…

FMECA Analyses of radiological over-exposure accident to patients in brachytherapy

2012

This paper presents safety analyses of accidental events which can involve patient during High Dose Rate brachytherapy treatment in over-exposures. The study has been performed by using the well-known techniques FMECA modified by Fuzzy logic theory. Moreover, fuzzy HEART methodology was employed in order to evaluate human error probabilities for each treatment stage. The obtained results, aimed to obtain a list of the deviations with a reasonable probability to produce significant adverse outcomes, provided some recommendations for procedures and safety equipments to reduce the occurrence of radiological over-exposure accidents.

Fuzzy risk analysis of a modern gamma-ray industrial irradiator

2011

Fuzzy fault tree analyses were used to investigate accident scenarios that involve radiological exposure to operators working in industrial gamma-ray irradiation facilities. The HEART method, a first generation human reliability analysis method, was used to evaluate the probability of adverse human error in these analyses. This technique was modified on the basis of fuzzy set theory to more directly take into account the uncertainties in the error-promoting factors on which the methodology is based. Moreover, with regard to some identified accident scenarios, fuzzy radiological exposure risk, expressed in terms of potential annual death, was evaluated. The calculated fuzzy risks for the exa…
